Dear Leaders of our World,
We students, teachers, heads of Schools and coordinators of the project Global Action Schools 2 Communities want you to take over the leadership in the climate-discussion and agree upon binding commitments for the upcoming decisive years. Your decisions in Copenhagen will have an impact on the day to day lives of the rest of the world and even more on those of future generations.
Your responsibility is a heavy burden but your courage will for sure inspire future generations if you choose to do what needs to be done! Because now is definitely not the time for weak compromises. We have much hope and we are sure that you are going to decide on sustainable results for a healthy planet.
As schools we have been active over this issue for several years. Global Action Schools across Europe and Thailand have shown commitment to the issue of climate change, raised awareness, took action and encouraged our leaders to make the necessary changes and commitments.
We as schools also want to contribute to a positive change in climate policy and therefore we need your support and trend-setting decisions in Copenhagen:
Firstly: Schools are the place where young people are growing up, learning, thinking of how to shape their own future and that of our planet. We teach and learn in a cooperative way and you are the ones who shape the ideas they are looking at.
Secondly: Schools are larger buildings which can be a resource themselves in providing and using clean energy for the school and the surrounding community. Thirdly: A clever system of public transport to schools reduces the emissions in this respect a lot.
Fourthly: Regional, seasonal and fair traded food and goods in school kitchens are a contribution to a healthy environment and clearly show the complexity of the topic you are working on in Copenhagen.
Fifthly: Schools try to use their green areas around the schools in a proper way, e.g. to use it for planting vegetables or trees, if possible.
This letter goes out to you on behalf of the pupils and students of the Global Action Schools 2 Community network and therefore represents XXX schools and approximately XXX pupils in five European countries.
Schools should use special color divided litter-baskets for sorted (recycled) litter.
